Illegal Immigration
Today, June 17, 2010, The Deseret Morning News printed the letter shown here.
Below is a letter I submitted in response:
George Chapman (Letters to the Editor, June 17, 2010) is convinced that illegal immigrants “work hard, they love this country, they support the local police, they help solve crimes, they pay taxes and they help American companies and farmers.” While I’m sure that there are many who fit this description, how is it that Mr. Chapman is so sure that, among all these sterling would-be members of our society who choose to slip across our borders, there are not one or two who have more nefarious goals in mind? It is surely a panglossian outlook on life to think that, if we just opened our borders to all comers, unicorns and rainbows would descend on our land, and any who had evil intentions would be converted to hard-working, honest members of our society. I can only assume that Mr. Chapman has no locks on his home, leaves his keys in the car when he parks, and doesn’t need to bother with any pesky little irritations such as theft insurance. Unfortunately, the rest of us must live in the real world: the world where there are bad men and women who intend harm to us, our fellow citizens, our society, and our culture. In this world, while there are many, many good people, there are also some bad ones from whom we must protect ourselves. Recently, we read that the Sonoran Desert National Monument has been placed on a travel advisory, recommending that US citizens stay away due to the high level of crime committed by these self-same immigrants so highly praised by Mr. Chapman. As far as I know, this is the first instance of a travel advisory being issued for an area within the United States; heretofore, we have only heard of them being applied to foreign countries. We mus protect ourselves. One element of this protection is controlling our national borders to prevent, insofar as possible, the entry of these people. There are federal laws that exist to authorize this; unfortunately, our national government refuses to enforce these laws, leaving the border states vulnerable to depredations by illegals. Why is it surprising that these states should feel the need to protect themselves?
